National Shortage of Affordable Rental Housing

The U.S. has a shortage of 7 million rental homes affordable and available to extremely low-income renters, whose household incomes are at or below the poverty guideline or 30% of their area median income. Only 36 affordable and available rental homes exist for every 100 extremely low-income renter households. Extremely low-income renters face a shortage in every state and major metropolitan area. Among states, the supply of affordable and available rental homes ranges from only 18 for every 100 extremely low-income renter households in Nevada to 61 in West Virginia. Among the 50 largest metropolitan areas in the U.S, the supply ranges from 13 affordable and available rental homes for every 100 extremely low-income renter households in Las Vegas, NV, to 50 in Providence, RI.  (READ MORE)

Center for Racial Equity Announces The Winners of the Competitive Grant Application for Two-Years of Assistance to Close the Gap

The Center for Racial Equity, Florida Housing Coalition’s initiative that provides support for communities looking to advance racial equity in housing, announced the winners of its competitive grant program entitled Closing the Racial Gap in Homeownership (Closing the Gap). Both the City of Fort Pierce, and the City of West Palm Beach will receive 24 months of technical assistance  to help close the homeownership gap amongst Black and white families in their respective communities. Florida Housing Coalition Launches Training Module for Nonprofits Seeking to Build Affordable Housing

Entitled Building Capacity to Build, the Florida Housing Coalition has launched a new FREE training module designed to help nonprofits develop the capacity they need to thrive in building affordable housing and is being made available free through January 1st thanks to a grant from Fifth Third Bank. Habitat for Humanity of Marion County Achieves Community Land Trust Certification in Pioneering Statewide Program


Habitat for Humanity of Marion County received its Community Land Trust Certification – the first such non-profit in the state to be awarded the distinction. “For so many communities in our state, CLT’s are an essential solution for ensuring permanent affordability,” stated Florida Housing Coalition President and CEO Jaimie Ross. “We are thrilled that our state is leading the nation in standardizing CLT best practices. Two Reports Detail Pandemic’s Effect on Housing Needs in Florida

Today, the National Low Income Housing Coalition (NLIHC) and the Florida Housing Coalition released independent reports that tell a consistent story—the national housing crisis and Florida’s housing crisis have been exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic — induced by a loss of employment and an unusually high priced housing market for both homeownership and rentals. According to both The Gap: A Shortage of Affordable Homes and the Florida Housing Coalition’s 2021 Home Matters Report, many low-income households were already struggling to afford their rent even before COVID-19 devastated so many throughout the state.
