Enhancing Your Housing Strategies, including New SHIP Requirements

When the Florida Legislature’s Senate Bill 360 was signed into law last summer, it made several significant changes to the SHIP program. Some changes may require a jurisdiction to update its Local Housing Assistance Plan (LHAP) regarding a number of topics, including:

  • Assistance to households with special housing needs, including elderly or disabled applicants,
  • The integration of green housing principles into housing strategies,
  • Assistance for mobile homes,
  • Methods for preserving assisted housing,
  • and more

 These required SHIP changes are of most interest to the SHIP jurisdictions that are scheduled to provide Florida Housing with an updated LHAP by May of this year. But there are several other topics that should be considered to possibly improve the effectiveness of a jurisdiction’s housing strategies. How does a housing strategy’s design affect the end results? How do you establish a per unit maximum amount of assistance that meets the needs of your community? Are there certain strategies that every community should implement?

This required core curriculum workshop is designed for the housing professional who wants to learn more about which strategies work best under which circumstances. The workshop will focus on the proper format that Florida Housing requires for Local Housing Assistance Plans.

Who Should Attend:

  • Core curriculum participants
  • Local government housing administrators;
  • Local government elected officials;
  • Local Advisory Committee members; and
  • Community partners involved with or interested in making recommendations to enhance the current program.

Key Topics:

  • Reviewing new SHIP requirements requiring LHAP revisions
  • Identifying community needs;
  • Overview of SHIP Housing Assistance Options;
  • Review of Sample Strategies
  •
